Wednesday, January 23, 2008, 6:30 p.m. William Kentridge, NOTE: William Kentridge is not able to join us for the Shapiro Lectures this year. The American Painter, Eric Fischl, will lecture instead.Eric Fischl: My Art Then and Now, Is it still a narrative when the body leaves? Eric Fischl achieved fame in the 1980s with images of suburban ambiguity and drama described by a New York Times critic as “press[ing] down hard on the exposed nerve of our time.” In the succeeding decades he has continued to be one of America’s most important narrative painters, his works ranging from complex, multi-part series to intimate portraits.

12:00 Noon Walk Our Way: A “Symbols of Power” Tour, Presented by the MFA Teen Arts Council, This Tour will be ASL Interpreted by Wendy Jehlen and Michael Sullivan
Assistive Listening Devices are also available. Join students from the MFA’s Teen Arts Council as they highlight shoes from the “Walk This Way” exhibition and share stories about their significance in the everyday world. Appropriate for all ages.

1:30 pm “Symbols of Power” in the MFA’s Permanent Collection An American Sign Language Tour by Ayisha Knight-Shaw For those fluent in American Sign Language, join Ayisha Knight-Shaw for a “Symbols of Power” tour of the MFA’s permanent collection. No spoken English.

Take a “Symbols of Power” tactile sculptural tour of the MFA’s permanent collection for visitors who are blind or have low vision. Meet in the West Wing Lobby.

11:00 am -3:30 pm Kendrick Oliver and the New Life Jazz Orchestra Enjoy the exhilarating sounds of classic big band jazz with a new generation spin as Berklee College of Music alum Kendrick Oliver and the New Life Jazz Orchestra present original music and words by power house musicians like Lionel Hampton.No pre-registration required if you have a sighted guide or service animal.

Ongoing Activities for Children and Families

10:00 to 4:00 Family Place Lower Rotunda, Go “Symbol Sighting” in the Art of the Ancient World galleries. Discover the curious meanings of art works, and make your own art as you explore.

10:00 to 4:00 Ceramic Symbol Exploration, 2nd Floor Japanese Galleries, Search for intricately painted symbols on Chinese Ceramics and learn what they mean. Make sketches and create your own vessel using clay in the Workshop Studio.
