Artist Residency Program

Guidelines and Application Form 2010 – 2011

(To print this document, click here to download it in Microsoft Word format.)

Description:

The VSA arts of Massachusetts (VSAM) Artist Residency Program partners with schools to provide opportunities for arts-based instruction and opportunities for inclusion of students with and without disabilities. VSAM does this by pairing teaching artists with teachers to collaborate towards specific learning goals. The artist co-teaches with teachers in order to enhance the curriculum and introduce inclusive teaching strategies through the arts. To VSA arts of Massachusetts, the arts can provide multiple options for students to interact with academic content, demonstrate their understandings, and engage in learning.

We work in schools that are inclusive, working towards inclusion and special education settings. As a partner organization we can support other school efforts towards inclusion by providing opportunities for students with and without disabilities to work together in arts-based instruction. To view videos of current programs, please visit www.vsamass.org

VSA arts of Massachusetts reports to VSA arts, U.S. Department of Education, Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, and other funders on how residencies “increase academic content knowledge of the participants, primarily people with disabilities.”

Cost of the VSAM Artist Residency Program:

Artist Residency Programs take place once a week for a minimum of 12 weeks. Schools may choose to have longer or multiple residencies. The fees indicated below include artist fees for one artist, supplies, travel, planning and VSAM overhead costs. Fees for residencies involving more than one artist are higher.

One 12-week residency Two 12-week residencies One yearlong residency (36 weeks)

Application Guidelines and Requirements:

VSA arts of Massachusetts partners with schools to allow students with special needs to have greater access to and participation in the arts and their school communities. VSAM raises financial support for this program through private and public sources. (Please read, sign and return to VSA arts of Massachusetts along with your Artist-in-Residency Request Form.)

Requirements are as follows:

  1. Programs must meet the following U.S. Department of Education objective:

“To increase academic content knowledge of the participants, primarily people with disabilities.”

  1. The program must be led by a VSA arts of Massachusetts teaching artist in collaboration with one or more classroom teachers. We will work to connect your site with the artist that best fits your needs.
  1. The experience should be participatory for all students and teachers identified and last for a minimum of 12 weeks (meeting once a week). In other words, the proposed project should not be limited to a single performance or demonstration where students are merely observers.
  1. In designing the residency program, specific I.E.P. goals and academic content goals need to be addressed.  During the initial planning meeting, the teaching artist and classroom teacher(s) will establish learning and artistic goals for the residency.
  1. Sites granted a VSA arts of Massachusetts Artist Residency are responsible for assisting in coordinating a short training session or planning meeting from VSAM to the site staff prior to the start of the residency.  This presentation will inform staff and members of the site about this residency and about VSAM.  During the residency, VSAM Education Program Managers will return for site visits and documentation.
  1. As a financial supporter of the residency project, VSA arts of Massachusetts should be identified in any press release and /or media recognition as a funder of the project.  VSA arts of Massachusetts requests that it be identified as a funder during culminating events (i.e. a demonstration, performance, and/or exhibit). Our logo is available upon request.

VSAM Partners for Fieldtrips

Fieldtrips are a way to extend the learning out of the classroom and into the community. They also provide opportunities for volunteers and guardians to be involved with the school.  Fieldtrips will be arranged during planning meetings and school staff will be notified of upcoming opportunities throughout the year.

* Transportation Costs:  Due to budget cuts VSAM will not be able to provide funding for transportation this year.

BOSTON

Wheelock Family Theatre: VSAM provides tickets to performances and schools are expected to cover transportation. Tickets to the VSAM partner performances include a free viewing for teachers and a Dramashop (actors visit the classroom to engage students before the show with drama-based activities). We will announce the VSAM fieldtrip dates early in the fall.

MFA Artful Adventures (Year round): Artful Adventures provides opportunities for children ages 4 and older to connect with the art and cultures of Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas through engagement with the MFA collections. Teachers and group leaders work closely with Museum educators to design customized adventures that fit the interests and needs of each group. Each visit lasts an hour and a half and combines gallery exploration with an art-making activity. We also offer Artful Adventures to bilingual groups (Spanish and French). VSAM includes this with the residency cost, but will not be able to cover transportation.

Looking 2 Learn at Mass Art (Year round):  The college's innovative gallery education program, brings public school children to exhibitions. The program's objective is to promote visual thinking through interactive, inquiry-based activities. Children learn how to look by doing, by imagining what the artists were thinking about when they created the work, or by projecting their own imagination onto what exists in the work.

Festival at the Boston Children’s Museum: Every June, VSA arts of Massachusetts invites your class to join us at the Boston Children's Museum to celebrate inclusion of students with and without disabilities in grades k-5. Come express, create, and share your unique abilities and talents with others during a day of hands-on art activities. There is a suggested donation of $50 to cover part of the museum entrance and the school is expected to arrange transportation.

WORCESTER

Worcester Museum of Art (Year round): The Worcester Art Museum provides an ideal environment for your students to connect cultures, civilizations and continents throughout time. Over fifty centuries of art in our collection and exciting special exhibits throughout the year will inspire creativity in your students and encourage understanding in a variety of disciplines. Opportunities include a gallery tour, studio workshop, a Resource Center, Outreach programs and kits, lectures and classes.

Worcester Festival: VSA arts of Massachusetts invites your class to join us to celebrate inclusion of students with and without disabilities in grades 9-12. Come express, create, and share your unique abilities and talents with others during a day of hands-on art activities. This year, the Festival will take place at the Whitin Mill at Alternatives, in Whitinsville. Explore food, clothing and shelter for a green planet through the arts. Suggested donation is $50 per school group (maximum 30 students). Each school must arrange transportation.

Professional Development Opportunities

VSAM offers Professional Development opportunities for our partner schools and recommends that new schools receive training before the beginning of residencies. Our PD focuses on arts integration strategies that support learning and engagement for students with and without disabilities. More specifically, we look at ways in which the arts can provide students with multiple options to interact with content, express what they know and engage in learning. In-school training for partner schools is included in the cost of residencies.

We also provide professional development opportunities that are open to teachers and administrators outside the school. Visit our website, www.vsamass.org or contact us throughout the year for more information.  Trainings include:

Defining Pathways in the Arts: Art and Universal Design for Learning (UDL): In this workshop, participants explore how the arts can offer students multiple ways to interact with academic content, express what they know and engage in learning.

The Arts and MCAS-Alt: Evidence of Learning through the Arts: Supports teachers to use the arts in their classrooms to engage students and to use student work in the arts as evidence of learning in MCAS-Alt portfolios.

"Start with the Arts": Start with the Arts is an instructional program created by VSA arts for pre-school and early elementary school learners that uses the arts to assist young children, including those with disabilities, in exploring themes commonly taught in early childhood classrooms, while developing basic literacy skills and self-expression. We offer workshops for educators and parents.

"Multi-Arts Resource Guide": Learn hands-on activities in teaching the core curriculum to students of different ages and abilities. VSAM offers workshops based on MARG for teaching artists, regular and special education teachers and paraprofessionals.
