Upcoming American Sign Language and ASL Interpreted Events

Free American Sign Language Tours, Introduction to the Museum Collections, are offered the second Wednesday of each month (except for July) at 6:00 p.m.  No pre-registration required.  To attend, ask for a free admission ticket from any cashier (the Museum is free on Wednesdays after 4:00 p.m.) and meet Leon Jerfita, MFA ASL Guide, at the Sharf Visitor Center.  The tour leaves promptly at 6:00 p.m.  Latecomers should check with staff at the Sharf Visitor Center for the location of the tour.

Check out the new MFA handheld multimedia guide with stops in American Sign Language for objects in the Museum's Art of the Americas and Contemporary Wings.  The MFA's iPod multimedia guide is free to those who use ASL. Ask at the Sharf Visitor Center and try it out on your next Museum visit.

ASL Interpreted Gallery Talk, "Divine Adornment in the Ancient World," with Lydia Herring-Harrington (ASL Interpreters: Rebekah Mills and Kelly McQuillan).  Free with Museum admission, this Gallery Talk leaves from the Sharf Visitor Center at 12:00 noon and visits the Greek and Roman collections examining the role of cult and votive statues in ancient religious practice.  In conjunction with the exhibition "Aphrodite and the Gods of Love," we will focus particularly on votive statues of Aphrodite that are adorned with precious jewelry.

ASL Interpreted Artist Demonstration: Sculpture with Morris Norvin
(ASL Interpreters: Rebekah Mills and Wendy Jehlen)
Druker Community Room
Explore the intricacies of sculpting with artist Morris Norvin.  Working in clay and alabaster Mr. Norvin will carve the human torso.  Learn how the artist considers volume space, line and texture in creating three-dimensional objects.  Afterwards, visit the exhibition "Aphrodite and the Gods of Love," and see 150 Greek and Roman presentations of this powerful goddess.  This program is free with Museum admission. No pre-registration required.

ASL Interpreted Artist Demonstration: Jewelry Repoussé with Linda Kindler Priest

Join Jewelry artist Linda Kindler Priest for a demonstration of the ancient metal technique of repoussé.  Working with silver she will sculpt the metal with handmade tools to create images in low relief.  Afterwards, see some examples of her repoussé in "Jewels, Gems, and Treasures", gallery 104.  This program is free with Museum admission.  No pre-registration required.

ASL Interpreted Artist Demonstration: Political Cartooning with Tak Toyoshima
(ASL Interpreters: Wendy Jehlen and Kelly McQuillan)

Explore the intriguing world of political cartooning with artist Tak Toyoshima.  Learn about the sources of inspiration and styles of this art form.  Afterwards, visit the exhibition"Kawanabe Kyōsai and the Hell Courtesan", gallery 278a, and see the extraordinary hanging scroll of this Japanese 19th-century artist who satirized the complex political events of his time in paintings and prints.  This program is free with Museum Admission.  No pre-registration is required.

ASL Interpreted Ruth and Carl J. Shapiro Celebrity Lecture Series
An Evening with Artist, Author and Filmmaker Marjane Satrapi
(ASL Interpreters: Lucy Annett and Amanda Riemer)
Award-winning graphic novelist and artist Marjane Satrapi makes a rare U.S. appearance.  Stories of her family-from dethroned emperors to heroes of the revolution-are captured in Persepolis, a book based on her own personal experience of the Islamic Revolution in Iran.  The animated film adaptation of Persepolis won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 2008 and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film.  A live action film based on her book Chicken with Plums will be released in France in October 2011, and a U.S. release date is forthcoming.  Join us for an intriguing evening with Marjane Satrapi as she discusses the origins of her creative process and work, expressing the enduring complexity and richness of Persian culture in today's Middle East.  Tickets Required.  Visit the MFA website to purchase tickets for this event.  Book signing follows.
